Dear Greenster, This week, we will be showing the hysterical neo-noir classic, "True Romance" (1993). Its the centerpiece in a trilogy by filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, wedged in between Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994). You may be asking, "I don't remember that film ... thats a Tarantino film?" One reason you may not of heard of it is because it was directed by Tony Scott. While writing the screenplay for "Reservoir Dogs", Tarantino split the story into two segments and sold "True Romance" to Hollywood for $50,000. With the proceeds, he filmed "Reservoir Dogs." The look and feel of the film are unmistakably Tarantino. Unfortunately, the title of the film didn't help sell tickets. In 1993, Filmgoers were generally confused about the nature of this action-based comedy and pretty much ignored it. It's hard to believe the poor box office results considering the cast includes the likes of Christian Slater, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Val Kilmer, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldmam, Patricia Arquette, James Gandolfini and Tom Sizemore. Over the years, the film's popularity and acclaim has soared. Tarantino's writing is so clever that the Brad Pitt character, Floyd, is somehow able to be responsible for about half the deaths in the movie simply by lying on a couch all day and getting high. And nobody knows it. Although this film shows alot of violence, there is a powerful pace and style that dilutes the normally shocking nature of brutality. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette star as a young couple in love. Circumstances require them to be running away from just about everyone. As you would expect, romantic love gets them through their crises. In somewhat of a parallel sense, I first viewed "True Romance" with my girlfriend on a small "cigarette lighter adapter" driven portable TV/VCR combo unit on a picnic table at a local county park. Our circumstances were such that her landlord had banned me from her rental unit. So, as a work-around, we enjoyed many outdoor dinners and movies at the park. Cafe Cinema will show "True Romance" at the Green Cafe in Idyllwild on Thursday, September 25. Show time is at 7:30 PM. We also show a short but brilliant segment from Harold Lloyd's 1922 comedic classic, "Safety Last." Its where Harold Lloyd hangs from the hand of a building's clock ... some twelve stories up. As always, admission and refreshments are free. Seating is limited so please feel free to bring your own comfortable chair, fluffy pillow, and blankets. Guests are encouraged to contribute by bringing additional food and drink. Cafe Cinema is generously sponsored by the Rustic Theater and Aroma Cafe of Idyllwild, California.
