The Amphitheater provided the stage for
the festival's headliners. World renowned James Moody,
played the tenor, alto, soprano sax, and flute with the fluidity, and deep resonance
that have made him one of the most expressive and enduring figures in modern jazz.
Straight from tours of Mexico, Tahiti, Brazil and Bahrain, the team of pianist Billy
Mitchell and saxaphonist / flutist John Bolivar ignited the audience with reggae
rhythm, blues and handclapping funk. Turiya Mareya and her six piece
Afro-Cuban Jazz ensemble came next and featured San Diego's most creative and energizing musicians.
Also performing were Roy Gonzales Percussion Ensemble, Steve Mideo, Pat Rizzo, Ken Dahleen's Big Band Staff, and
Yve Evans. Although the smallest of the three venues, the Barn had some of the day's greatest performances. The Harry Pickens Trio played as moving a set as one can ever imagine. Also at the top of his form, Grammy winner and founding member of Blood, Sweat & Tears, Richard Halligan played jazz that was intimate, sophisticated and witty. Also join Charles McPherson and Daniel Jackson for a Jam Session/Workshop. Their breathtaking blues and ballad interpretations are the ultimate in saxaphone improvisation. The other outdoor venue, the French Quarter was graced by Gill Quesada, Tommy Hines quartet, and Jazz Blues artist, Rocky Zharp. |
